She thought she had lost her paradise when they had first moved out here to Californny. The city didn't have nearly as much to offer as her beloved Hills. It was noisy and smelly and had far too many people clustered together. The people tended to be cruel, and the animals were scarce, unless you counted the pigeons whose only use in the world seemed to be to poo on everything in sight. But then there were days like today.

Granny smiled, basking in the afternoon sunlight after a full, hearty meal. She patted her belly as she looked around her. Her family, the whole three people who still remained in it, were all busy around her, but far more importantly, they were happy, and not just because of the food she'd cooked. Jethro was swimming in the cement pond with a bunch of girls his own age while Miss Jane looked on. Mister Drysdale was holding a lively conversation with Jed, but both men were grinning. Even Miss Jane seemed to be pleased enough to simply watch Jethro in his swim trunks as he showed off for the young'uns his own age.

She needed to find somebody Miss Jane's age with whom to set her up, Granny thought, eyeing both Jed and Mister Drysdale. On the one hand, one was a boss and married to a woman who always acted like she had all the venom of a rattler. Mister Drysdale would be a lot better off with Miss Jane, Granny thought, her eyes beginning to slide closed, but then so, too, would her Jed. She knew, too, that Jed was already a little sweet on Miss Jane. Despite his age, in truth, Jed could run circles around Jethro and had a little more to offer Miss Jane than the boy. She just had to make the ornery woman see it. Miss Jane was actually a very pleasant lady, but she could be damn sure stubborn where that boy was concerned.

Granny's eyes popped back open at a loud skittering sound. Someone had pissed off Elly Mae's momma possum again, and the animal was running with her brood attached to her back. Granny was glad those days were well pass her, she thought, but she was even gladder to see a whole string of boys chasing behind Elly. Well, shoot dang! I might get the girl married off yet!

All of her family had good matches. They were all happy and healthy. She was able to keep her pantry stocked even though she couldn't go hunting or fishing. And she actually had moments like now, Granny reflected drowsily, where she could nap and bask in the sun like a lazy, fat cat. With each passing day, she was missing the Hills less. Maybe this was what her family had needed after all. Maybe they hadn't lost paradise after all. Maybe it had only changed a little, and brought them many more blessings with those changes. Rocking, Granny snored.

The End
