Merton leaned out of his window, hanging his head out of his new apartment. In the last several months, since graduating high school, he had started spending steadily more time outdoors. He wasn't sure if that was saying a lot or a little as his skin was still paler than the most bleached sheet. He was feeling better than he'd ever felt living with his family, but it wasn't because of the moonlight, or rather sunlight.

His life had changed so much because of the wonderful man with whom he shared this very apartment. They still had not managed to get out of Pleasantville, but the urge was no longer as strong as it had once been. Tommy actually liked it here, but of course, having been the Captain of their high school football team, that wasn't very surprising. What was surprising was everything that had followed since, from his being bitten and transforming into a Werewolf every full moon night to Merton's long crush finally becoming a reality. It had always seemed impossible that Tommy would like him, but of course, he'd develop a crush over the one guy in the whole damn school who had been kind to him, who had, on occasion, stood up even before coming into his powers. Man or Werewolf, his Tommy had always been a hero.

The night was peaceful, at least for now. He could actually hear crickets chirping, which was a noise that would have never been noticed in the cities he'd once dreamed of going to escape this small town. There had been so many different, far more prestigious colleges that he had considered attending. The local college had never borne any interest for him, until Tommy had said that was where he was going, so here he was now, acing everything his new teachers could manage to throw at him in the daylight hours and surveying Tommy's heroics and transformations throughout their nights.

And there always seemed to be some reason for his boyfriend to play the hero. For such a quiet, sleepy little hamlet, Pleasantville certainly had its own unholy nest of Weres, Vamps, Demons, and other monsters. It was a veritable Sunnydale, but he was no Buffy, nor even Willow. He was the dangly, dorky geek who had once been the football team's favorite target, until Tommy had become its Captain.

Merton's dark eyes lifted to the blanket of stars he could see stretching out over their hometown. He wondered where his boyfriend was now, chasing down a random thief or battling one monster or another. He heard Tommy's howl from a distance and grinned. He was actually enjoying the night. Closing his eyes and leaning further out their window, Merton could easily envision him in his wolf, loping on all fours through Pleasantville's solitary park.

He'd be worn himself completely out by morning, Merton knew, but it was far pass time he finally got to enjoy the few perks of being a Werewolf. He considered, for just a moment, going outside and playing tag with him in the park, but he knew they both had several assignments due the next day. He left the window open, but returned to his desk and Tommy's waiting homework. He'd misspell just enough words and keep his handwriting just sloppy enough that their teachers would never guess what Tommy handed in the next day wasn't his own. Merton would get them both through school, but still, his Tommy was the real hero. Grinning broadly, Merton picked up his pencil and returned to the work at which he himself could excel.

The End
