"And this is the right thing, aye, Willy, m'boy?" Deadeye had questioned the Earthling kid insistently about the little plant he now held in his feathered hand. It seemed like such a small, scrawny thing, but he'd also witnessed what it could do, both in Willy's own attempts to woo the lad's first girlfriend and in the movies and other holiday viewings he had shared with the whole crew. Missletoe seemed always to work to get the girl, or the guy. Deadeye ran a prodding, ebony feather over the herb's leaves. Maybe that was why it was called missletoe: because it set a proverbial missle underneath whoever it was who was unlucky enough, or (he hoped his Captian would think) lucky, to be caught standing beneath it.
Willy had assured him he had the right thing a number of times before the crew had boarded. Now, while the others made their way to their individual seats, Deadeye shouldered his way toward the front of the cockpit. Bucky was already flipping buttons. "Not so fast there, Capt'n."
"Deadeye, what's wrong?" Bucky questioned, immediately concerned. His loyal gunman never interrupted piloting business!
Jenny swished her long, pink tail in her co-pilot seat as First Mate. She'd sensed something amiss with Deadeye since before they'd boarded, and her gift told her that he was hiding something -- although she did not sense it to be an altogether bad something. She had also saw him speaking in whispered tones with Willy shortly after Willy had won his kiss from his little ladylove. "Deadeye," she asked, "is something wrong?"
The duck moved with all the swift speed he was known for at the guns. Only, his current mission had absolutely nothing to do with battling. He had seen his dearest and oldest friends flirting back and forth for years, each withdrawing every time they would come close for different reasons. Bucky was determined to intent his entire being to the mission, and Deadeye had even, on occasion, heard him speak of his plans for the future, when the war was at last over and he could actually woo Jenny, if they both survived and she still held interest in him and did not immediately leave for Alderberan. Deadeye knew too that Jenny had certain duties on her homeworld, duties that meant that she was not supposed to copulate with any male, or female, especially not one of her leaders.
But gosh darn it all, they deserved to be happy! They deserved to be able to follow on what he'd seen, close and personal, growing between them for decades now. The war against the Toads might well never be over, at least not in their lifetime! They had all fur, or feathers as in his case, growing rapidly grayer. Their next day was not promised to them, especially in this battle! His friends had gone above and beyond everything their missions called for time and again. They devoted every sleeping and waking moment to croaking Toads, and they were both damn good people. They deserved to be happy.
He sprung, leaping up behind Bucky's Captain's chair and holding the plant high above the rabbit's head.
"Deadeye, what -- ?!" Bucky started to demand, but then his big eyes shot even bigger and his long, green ears stood out in alert at the herb he recognized in his gunman's hand. "What do you think you're doing with that?!" he demanded, swatting at the herb, but Deadeye was quicker than the rabbit and had eight arms.
As he tossed the herb rapidly from hand to hand, keeping his Captain at bay, Deadeye called to the startled Jenny, "Quick now, Jenny, m'girl! Here's yer chance! Kiss 'im!"
Jenny blinked startled eyes at Deadeye and Bucky. Her white fur darkened with shy embarrassment as her Captain turned his gaze onto her and stopped trying to grab the mistletoe from their gunner. "Jenny?" Bucky asked quietly, his green fur quivering and his ears perking toward her. "Is this true? Do you... Do you want to kiss me?"
Jenny's mind whirled while her heart pounded in her chest. She knew Bucky could hear its every beat, especially with as loud and fast as it was thumping. This was not her place! To have fallen in love with her Captain was bad enough -- it went against every order she was meant to follow, both as the First Mate of the Righteous Indignation and as a Princess of Alderberan! She shouldn't be falling in love with a green-furred rabbit Captain -- certainly not her own Captain --, and even if she had, she was still forbidden from acting on her own, selfish desires!
"Jenny, now's the time, girlie!" Deadeye urged.
"Jenny?" Bucky pressed in an anxious whisper that seemed to fill the small cockpit.
"AOOGA!" Jenny, Bucky, and Deadeye all physically jumped at the sudden Berserker Baboon yell.
With her hands covering her ears and her fur completely fluffed out, Jenny cried, "Bruiser, what in the cosmos -- ?!"
"Bruiser, explain yourself!" Bucky demanded, his ears now laying flat against his head. His mind pulsated from the babboon's trumpeting.
"JENNY WANT KISS BUCKY! BUCKY WANT KISS JENNY!"
The first to recover from the Berserker Baboon yell, Deadeye quickly joined in, "So now kiss, damn ya! I've got the missletoe!" he declared, shaking it again above Bucky's head. "You're not supposed to be able to say no!"
"Well, Jenny," Bucky spoke slowly. She could see he was visibly trembling from the tips of his long, green ears, which she'd fantasized toying with many times over their years together, through to the ends of his boots -- or, at least, every visible spot of him seemed to be quivering. She knew his species could not help displaying their true emotions, even though Bucky was normally a much better actor, having gone undercover for their mission many times. That just spoke even more volumes as to how greatly attracted he was to her, or could it possibly be more? She knew what she felt for him was no meager physical attraction, -- and whatever followed this moment, there could be no turning back. Their lives were never going to be the same, rather she chose to at last act on her feelings or to continue to deny them. But even if a Berserker Baboon could see so clearly how she felt for her beloved Captain, what choice did she really have? She'd surely not been hiding it nearly as well as she'd thought!
"I, hum, that is -- "
"Come on, girl; kiss him!" Deadeye quacked urgently. "We're all behind ya!"
"You realize how against protocol this goes," she stated quietly, her own, pointy ears quivering back and forth with her emotions. Her whiskers bristled. "If we go so strictly against orders and the Federation ever finds out -- "
"Then they don't find out!" quacked Deadeye. "Simple as that! Who's gonna tell 'em? I'm not, and I'll blow away any sucker who does!"
"JENNY KISS BUCKY! JENNY KISS BUCKY! JENNY -- "
"Easy, big fella," Deadeye said, patting Bruiser's hairy knee. "We don't need you clobberin' the Indignation. So how about it, Capt'n, First Mate? You gonna keep playin' the game an' trying to lie to everybody or are ya gonna follow tradition and -- "
"That is an Earth custom, Deadeye, not something that any of us -- "
Jenny leapt forward and pressed her kiss to her Captain's. Bucky silenced immediately, his lips quickly parting underneath hers and allowing her tongue entrance. He wasn't sure what she was doing to him -- perhaps it was some of her sorcery? --, but it felt suddenly as though he could feel the embrace of her tongue and lips, and hands that were not even touching anywhere on his body yet, everywhere at once. His ears shot straight up. His feet started to tap, blatantly ignoring any command from his brain to do otherwise, if he had even been able to form any serious thoughts. Everything inside of him felt all at once both aflame and lighter than air! His cotton tail shook as his crew whooped, hollered, and congratulated the two of them.
Jenny started to pull away, but Bucky moved then, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her closer. They continued to kiss for quite some time before Deadeye asked quietly, "Should I tell the boy we might be staying a few more days?"
"No," Bucky said, instantly pulling away.
Jenny licked her lips and purred, the sound of her joy and pleasure resonating around the cockpit. Her tail swished, but then curled around her left, silver boot. "We've got a mission," she agreed though her big, green eyes declared that she'd never look at any mission exactly the same way again.
Bucky refocused himself, training every thought back to his ship and the mission at hand. "Everybody, take your seats! Onward!" Yet as he took off, he couldn't help thinking that they were indeed moving onward in a direction he'd never truly thought possible before: onward with a relationship and perhaps even an actual future beyond the mission with his cherished First Mate, onward into a life where they could all be happy, onward thanks to a truly dedicated friend and a little Earth custom called missletoe.
