I shared some snippets of a crossover between Revolutionary Girl Utena and Firefly, which ended up encompassing several short fanfics and what might have been a much longer one if I'd ever gotten around to writing it.

"... Siffrin?" She asked.
He tossed the bucket aside and jumped off the branch. "Such is the name they call me. And you are?"
Mirabelle froze. Didn't... Didn't he... remember...
... He did have a bad memory. But... *that* bad...?
"... Mirabelle." She said. "... My name is Mirabelle."
"Well, then, Mirabelle." Siffrin smiled with a bit too many teeth. "Welcome to Streibough."

One of the greatest strengths (and joys) of Craig of the Creek, which we just finished watching at Cartoon Night, lies in its extensive, diverse, and memorable cast. Craig, Kelsey, and JP are at the heart of the show, but they were by no means the only ones at the creek who had significant character exploration and development. Here are my five favorite supporting characters, in no particular order.

1. Kit

At the risk of using the term “girlboss” unironically, Kit is… kind of a girlboss. She’s smart, she’s ambitious, she’s determined, and she’s unapologetically business-minded, a trait which is sometimes played for laughs but for which the narrative doesn’t seem interested in punishing her.

2. Isabella “Stacks” Alvarado

I’m pretty sure that if I’d watched the show when I was closer to the target age, I would have overidentified with Stacks, who had her own hideout in the library and yearned for someone to talk with about her favorite fantasy series. I’m so glad that she found that person and their storyline was one of my favorites.

3. Omar / The Green Poncho

I love the narrative framing around this character in his first few appearances – making it very clear why Craig and friends are in awe of him – as well as the slow reveal of his backstory and simultaneous (and very tentative) journey toward relating to the other kids as a friend instead of an icon.

4. Bernard Williams

I initially thought that I’d limit this list to Craig’s peers, but I have a soft spot for Bernard, and for repressed but caring older siblings in general. The Williams family dynamics are written with a lot of skill and care overall.

5. Maya

Most of us probably haven’t been armed enforcers for a self-styled preteen “king” who essentially ran his own cult, but a lot of us have probably had to re-evaluate our identity and purpose after a toxic friendship implodes, and at least try to mend fences with the people that we’ve hurt in the past. I love that none of this is easy for Maya but that she’s still willing to try.

At last, the infinity castle arc! Aaaaa it was so good. I saw it in a big movie theater, and it was so great. The only part that dragged was towards the end, with Akaza's tragic backstory flashback. But the fights were so good! I think my favorite part of this movie were the parts with Tanjirou's father.

I also love seeing how much Tanjirou has improved. It makes me kind of wish that the series was a lot longer, and that Tanjirou was able to become a Hashira, instead of it feeling a little bit like the ending suddenly happened. Like I feel like there could have been another arc or two before the Swordsmith Village arc, and then after that Tanjirou becomes a fully fledged Hashira, and then the Infinity Castle begins.

I'm looking forward to the next movies! I suspect they'll do the remainder of the Upper Moon fights in the second movie, and then the Muzan fight will be the third movie. Unsure where the final final arc will go, though, if it'll be part of movie 3, or if it'll be its own thing.

Silksong is here! It’s hard 😭 but the original Hollow Knight was also hard for me. But it’s a lot of fun! I want all the movement tech upgrades already… also a Godhome. I’m currently near the end of Act I, I’m stuck in Shellwood against Sister Splinter. I can reliably get to her second phase without taking any damage, but after that… I keep dying when I feel so close to winning.

Also, I read the Let’s Go Karaoke manga! I hadn’t realized that it was only one volume. It was a lot of fun! This is the type of thing that would rewire my brain if it were F/F. It’s fun as M/M, but it’s not tapping directly into my id the way a F/F version would be. The sequel manga is also fun! I’m not fully caught up on it, though. I also haven’t seen the anime yet, but it’s now on my list.

I’ve also been watching Naruto! I’ve read the manga, but haven’t previously seen the anime. It’s a lot of fun! I forgot how fun anime adaptations that need filler could be, the way that it fills in so many little details because it needs to fill up the runtime. I’m going to skip the anime-only filler arcs, but it’s nice seeing a more fleshed out version from the manga. This has also been amping up my fannish feelings for Naruto— I read it at a time when I was less into transformative fandom and was mainly there for the action. I’m planning on cosplaying Kakashi at an anime convention in December! I’m also itching to read as much Sakura femslash as I can.

My basket is here!

♥ I've been doing some writing! \o/ I've been writing some little fills for Fandom Gift Basket, and I'm also already making good progress on my [community profile] ficinabox assignment. (I just got my swaps! I'm even more excited by what I'm creating!) It's so nice and affirming to be feeling some good writing energy after experiencing burnout for so much of the year.

♥ There's a new Knives Out movie coming out this fall! Delighted to see more Benoit Blanc solving mysteries. The cast looks fun, too! Here's the trailer.

♥ I'm enamoured with this Sherlock Holmes book nook lego set! Lego Sherlock and Watson are so cute! There's a murder board! And I just love how Baker Street folds up into a book nook with the classic Holmes silhouette on the side. Incredibly charming!!

Three-quarters of the way up the drainpipe on the east side of Miss Scrimmage's Finishing School for Young Ladies, Melvin "Boots" O'Neal felt something give under his foot. He scrambled frantically for the window ledge, and clung to it in desperation as the section of drainpipe that had, until very recently, been his foothold, broke off from the wall and went crashing into the shrubbery below.

The New Yorker is trying to convince me that Bluesky has become annoying and everyone’s back on Xitter. Not linking because it’s paywalled. True or false?

I never got the hang of Twitter. I have similar problems with Bluesky. I don’t need a social site to deliver me more links. I want conversation. Is conversation dead? Where is it? (I know there’s some here…)

Hello! It’s been a moment!! Last month I fell in love with this super cute kitty pattern (that’s free somehow!!) and made it 3 times! The first two were gifts, and I forgot to take pictures before giving them away unfortunately, but the last one was for myself! I wanted a little charm for the Kino Itabag that I have, so: a Kino themed kitty!!! :D

2025 IFComp entries: some thoughts

The Interactive Fiction Competition (IFComp) is an annual celebration of new, text-driven digital games and stories from independent creators. You can play as many of the entries as you like and vote for them in a ballot (requires a free signup). The vote is up to 15 Oct. I have played several of the choice based entries playable online.

Games I have finished and like:

Saltwrack: "A crew of three. A lost city, far in the north. A thousand miles of toxic ice. Plot your course, manage supplies, study apocalypse biota, and don't lose your mind. You'll find out why the world was ruined, or die trying. Content warning: This is a work of horror; it gets grim. Specific content warnings are available in the game's ABOUT page."

thoughts: I like it most. Very atmospheric, and the resource management gameplay really matches how grim and strange the world is.

Pharos Fidelis: "A romantic island getaway. CW: graphic violence, sexually suggestive content, toxic academia, denial of agency, hunger, death. Postmodern fantasy-horror gay demon melodrama"

thoughts: I find the world building with demon summoning intriguing. The gay reluctant summoner/demon romance is nice. I also like the check point system: saving me time to replay.

The Litchfield Mystery: "A wealthy businessman, dead in his study. Eight suspects, harbouring secrets and twisted truths. "There's always more to it than meets the eye..." To others, a tired cliché. To you, the cardinal principle that has successfully guided you in all your cases as The Sleuth. And you, Detective Pearce, are not about to let this one go cold."

thoughts: The walkthrough is very detailed and useful. The clues are reasonable, and the solution makes sense.

The Secrets of Sylvan Gardens: "When you find yourself sleepwalking in the lush ornamental gardens of the Sylvan Villa, you must discover how to break the thrall of a mysterious trance. You will be aided in your journey by the gardens' keepers: a gardener, a botanist, a librarian, and an enigmatic hermit. Form bonds of friendship or pursue a slow-burn romance as you roleplay, helping these companions with quests that draw you deeper into their individual stories."

thoughts: It's a cosy fantasy adventure with a good mix of puzzles. The NPc are cute and I love spending time with them. I also like the thoughtful ending choices, The creator(s) also created Fantasy Opera: Mischief at the Masquerade (solving a mystery before an opera opening) & The Path of Totality (cozy fantasy road trip adventure), which are both enjoyable

Penthesileia: "Your husband is a very important man, he tells you; many would like to see his head on a silver platter. Content warning: Material may not be suitable for children; please note strong language, as well as allusions to death, sexual themes, and violence"

thoughts: It's linear and quite obvious how the plot will go, but it's satisfying to play to the end.
