Title: Come Home Again
AO3: Link
Rating: G
Series: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT 2003)
Wordcount: 1,811
Summary: The brothers debrief following the assault by the Ultimate Drako that saw them scattered across the multiverse. Well. Mostly.
Remarks: Phew, running a bit behind on cross-posting, so let's start with the TMNT fics! I started this one a few years ago when I was just idly mucking around trying to get a feel for their voices, but I ended up liking it well enough to work on bringing it to a conclusion. SAINW is such an episode and I love characters not talking about things.

did I mention the superpowers? )

Remarks: Sydney/Quarry is one of my favourites of the side characters and it is CRIMINAL they did not bring her back six more times.

Weekend Cooking: Rice Waffles

One cupful of cold boiled rice beaten light with one cupful of milk. Add one tablespoonful of melted butter, half a teaspoonful of soda dissolved in a little of the milk, two eggs well beaten, and enough flour, sifted in with one teaspoonful of cream tartar, to make a thin batter. Beat thoroughly and bake in well-greased waffle-irons. Cream tartar and spices are practically certain to be pure when bought of a druggist instead of a grocer. (Not knocking the groceryman.)

MCYT & Minecraft... again

I have finished Bdubs's Hermitcraft season 10, and caught up with his Hermitcraft season 11! He is such an inspiration to me as a builder, he's just incredible. I just started watching Welsknight's season 10, I'm trying him out and so far he's fun, nice and laid back and chill! I really like building in a somewhat medieval style, so I'm hoping that his builds also inspire me, especially if his building style is more... accessible? than Bdubs? Like Bdubs' builds are amazing, but it feels so intimidating to try and imitate. They're beautiful, but it's just easier for me to steal from less detailed and intricate builds haha. Or maybe it's more that the medieval style comes more naturally to me, so it's easier? We'll see, I guess. But yeah, Bdubs' builds in season 10 were incredible, I loved his terraforming and how atmospheric and immersive his builds always are.

I'm super excited to play on the Hermitcraft s10 world download! I'm a little intimidated by the Hermitcraft world downloads in general to be honest, because they have a fair amount of data and resource packs, but I am determined to play Decked Out 2 eventually. I also want to wander the worlds that the hermits built, and experience it all. I recently realized that while I really enjoy watching Hermitcraft, I've lost interest in reading or writing fic for the fandom. But, what I do want to do, is to draw fanart! Except I don't want to draw the cubitos, I want to draw landscapes and the hermits' builds. So I'm excited to explore the world downloads and look for good scenes and angles and bits to draw.

Regarding playing Minecraft itself, I ended up getting frustrated in my creative world, I think because I tried to go too big too soon. But I don't really have very many ideas for smaller things, so it's tricky. I did start a new survival world, though. Not large biomes this time, and I made sure to get a spawn that had a lot of plains biomes because that's what I'd like to mainly build in right now, and I don't want to have to travel very far from spawn to get to where my main base is. But I haven't finished my starter base yet, mainly because I realized that the block I wanted to use for the walls on top of the chiseled tuff brick foundation, would be moss, and I don't have any lush caves super nearby. So I'm going to have to go on a resource gathering journey for all of the saplings. It's tricky trying to build without having access to all of the wood types! But I think the biomes are close enough by and connected by water that I can just take a chest boat and get most, if not all, of what I need. I'm not sure what I'm going to do for the roof-- maybe spruce? But the base is chiseled tuff bricks, and then it'll be like mossy walls. I'll post some screenshots when I have it done! Or when I have enough progress that it's more than just a rectangle outline of chiseled tuff bricks on the ground.

I was working during most of the Hermitcraft charity stream, but I was able to donate a little bit! I donated to enter a question for the Hermit Q&A, but I haven't been able to find a VOD of the Q&A to see if my question was asked (it was about build styles anyone hasn't built in yet but that they wanted to). I also participated in the auction, mainly trying to get the Lizzie Life Series pin, but unfortunately I got outbid and didn't have it in my budget to go higher.

Anyways that's mostly what I've been doing lately fandom-wise! I expect to get back to watching Naruto Shippuden and other anime once I'm done watching Welsknight's Hermitcraft season 10.

I'm still kicking! And will catch up on my reading page soon! RL has been a lot, not even necessarily in a bad way, just—a substantial shift in how my "free time" is spent. March did not feel real and April even less so. Not a fan of that tbh.

I have been a fan of the HFTMT episodes leading up to the upcoming season finale, particularly Usidore's crew. c: That's kinda the only fictional media I've had much time for as of late.

Perhaps that's a lie. I haven't picked it up in a couple weeks, so it feels wrong to claim it as a current activity, but! I've been playing through Pokemon Alpha Sapphire. I am quite fond of Zinnia <3

Last thing I'll mention is [tumblr.com profile] girl-blorbo-polls on Tumblr. They do a blorbo show-and-tell where people can gush in their inbox about their current (female) blorbo, and I enjoy the sheer variety. So many characters and fandoms I haven't even heard of, but each one of them is someone's fave. :) It's the loveliest thing, and as a bonus, I feel a liiittle more in the loop.

Here are five things about the warmer weather that make me happy, or that I look forward to, every year.

1. More greenery on the trees

2. Outdoor craft markets and farmers’ markets

3. Yard sales

4. Outdoor cafe seating and picnics

5. Dog owners spending more time outside with their dogs, and giving me more time to make friends

I would probably love to enjoy any of these things with you, if we can.

Dear Creator,

I'm sure I'll like whatever you make for me, so just have fun! I know there are some characters/pairings that have more prompts than others, but that just means I had a lot of ideas for those (or had a past letter to copy & paste from). If I requested a character, I would be happy to see just about anything for them!

This is an ~30-minute episode of a Vox podcast called “Today Explained.” There is a transcript.

”How fan fiction went mainstream: The community that underpins Heated Rivalry, explained” by Danielle Hewitt and Noel King

It’s a pretty good intro to fanfic and how it’s become something publishers and creators of TV/movies pay attention to. They interview Francesca Kappa, a co-founder of the Organization for Transformative Works, which created AO3.

Things I learned and some bits I liked:
  • AO3 was created in part to prevent commodification of fanfiction and the social connections it facilitates.
  • “one of the projects that I worked on in the early days of the OTW organization for transformative works was that we were being contacted by women in their 70s and 80s who were like having to move in with their kids or going into nursing homes and they had like 3,000 fan fiction zines.”
  • It was claimed that AO3 is “much bigger than Wikipedia.” I’m not sure what metrics they’re using to come up with that.
  • [AO3 is] “structurally unenshittifiable” because “we don’t have customers and we’re not a business.”
  • (Discussing copyright) “it would have been terrible if Shakespeare had to, like, negotiate with Netflix for the right to Hamlet and then didn't get it. Like, that's the world we live in, right? We're like, Netflix owns Hamlet, it has a five-year option, Shakespeare really has a great idea for it, but like, no, I'm really sorry because JJ. Abrams is going to do Hamlet.”
(I need to know which circle of Hell shows JJ Abrams’s Hamlet on repeat, because I really want to avoid it.)

media round-up

[personal profile] sideways
It is getting dangerously close to a year since my last media round-up, so knocking out a few highlights.

• On the back of my mother's hands-clasped "please please you'll love it" begging I read Project Hail Mary over Christmas, and subsequently watched the movie during Easter. And I did really like it! It confirmed my suspicion that Andy Weir is not actually a very good writer - a suspicion then sealed in stone when he opened his big yap and honked out some downright comically blinkered views on the place of politics in sci-fi - but a good amount of charm battled through despite his best efforts.

• I sort of discovered I could acquire more anime DVDs than I even knew existed via eBay and, well... proud to say I now have my own copies of Wolf's Rain, Baccano, Fafner in the Azure: Dead Aggressor, and Gundam 00. This last in particular was such a trip down ol' nostalgia lane it was a little overwhelming. "I'm looking forward to finding out whether this had as many interesting political points to make as I thought or whether I was just nineteen," I commented to some friends, and the answer turned out to be "yes".

• Also watched Paprika on Vesper's recommendation, and wow! Always delightful to experience a story that really gets dream logic. I had Paprika Parade on repeat for days afterwards.

• We also had a crack at Reanimal, in which the real villain was my GOD-AWFUL internet connection that caused me to drop out every half hour or so. The game has a very strong aesthetic atmosphere and some truly wonderful and spooky moments, but it's a bit short for the price-tag and I hold that it would have benefited from some tighter thematic editing. So it goes! I'm still interested to see what Tarsier does next.

• Lane and I have reunited to tackle Divinity: Original Sin: The First One: It's Origining time. I like to think my grasp of tactics has improved since I was last setting my own head on fire with distressing regularity, but Lane may disagree. We've so far made it past the first act and notable incidents include sort of unnecessarily murdering a couple of NPCs right out the gate, wheeze-laughing every time the companion with the dreadful southern accent utters the word "comrade", and slaughtering our way through a very long succession of goblins before realising there was probably an easier way to do this.

• Managed a strong start to the book-reading front this year. Our Wives Under the Sea was gorgeously written but a little thin on actual meat for my tastes; it felt like a short story stretched out to its very limits. The Lathe of Heaven was a hell of a ride; what I would have considered the ultimate chilling conclusion happened somewhere around the middle, leaving me with no choice but to follow along blindly into what happened next. The City of Last Chances was simply a slog; I clawed my way out the other end and do not intend to return.
