I recently decided that I wanted a new default icon, and that I wanted it to be a Seliph drawn by [tumblr.com profile] asphodelis ! It turned out perfect, he is soooo cute and it's such a pretty drawing!

Okay, I knoooooow I am being rubbish at all my other bingos currently, but if [community profile] allbingo's August theme happens to be irresistible, everything will be different this time, right? XD

(Tbf, the odds are rather better than the last few weeks anyway...)

But, I give you a Crime Classics Bingo Card made from titles from the British Library's crime catalogue:

Someone from the Past He Who Whispers Tour de Force Fear Stalks the Village Antidote to Venom
Family Matters Foreign Bodies Tea on Sunday It Walks by Night Green for Danger
Settling Scores As If By Magic WILD CARD The Black Spectacles Somebody at the Door
Twice Round the Clock The Man Who Didn’t Fly Excellent Intentions Crossed Skis Serpents in Eden
The Wheel Spins Final Acts Deep Waters Not to Be Taken Bats in the Belfry

I love it. I even got the source for The Lady Vanishes, go me! Any suggestions? (With the usual caveat of me probably doing something else anyway, heh.)

Three random pictures, probably from Tumblr, whose identification and sources I lost at some point while I was thinking "oh, I should icon that at some point" (pretty sure #3 is Pete Seeger though); three bits of my own amateur art (and a fourth I will post later if I remember to); and three Gunnerkrigg Court icons.

Somewhat to my chagrin it turns out I do not have a good laser cow font. )

Questions are from [personal profile] kitarella_imagines. Figured this would be great for the Fannish 50.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

145 works (I don't think I've quite updated all my fics to AO3, so check out [community profile] harpiewriting for a complete list pre-2014 when I kinda stopped using LJ for the most part. I'll have to add those works to the community.)

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

154,381 words. (Again I don't think I've quite updated all my fics to AO3, so check out [community profile] harpiewriting for a complete list pre-2014 when I kinda stopped using LJ for the most part. I'll have to add those works to the community.)

3. What fandoms do you write for?

So many.... the ones with the most works are Smallville, X-Men, Harry Potter, Fantastic Four, Supernatural, Wizards of Waverly Place, and the Arrowverse.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

  • Since I'd already assembled about 90% of the vid, now it's about small tweaks and how I want the story to flow, before getting into more minute edits and effects.
  • I watched a good number of minutes of Rebels, and have very little to show for it. A tiny handful of clips that I can maybe use, but the way the art style shifts in its depiction of Ahsoka is hard to reconcile, so I don't think I'll be showing many shots of her face.
  • I also don't think I'll be using any of the new Tales of the Empire content for Barriss other than some bits from the first episode. The rest just don't do it for me
  • Overall, I'm leaning towards having these future/post-Clone Wars moments appear like glimpse, only for a beat, but not as part of the narrative, really. Most likely in the intro, post-chorus, and bridge instrumental. I think it can create a cool frenetic effect that matches the song if it's flashing between a lot of different moments in time, but I'd want it to feel intentional and relatively subtle. It should flow well visually
  • I might focus on using the footage of their respective times in prison/custody to bookend the vid, with some sort of release at the end. A wide shot? And I'd like it to be open-ended in a way that implies they may cross paths one day again and that their future relationship is ambiguous.
Here's a sneak peek at what it looks like so far! It feels so damn close to being done but there is still so much more I feel I need to do. I'm treating it like a present for my past self who really wanted this to exist but did not have the knowledge to make it herself.

Man, it's been so long... March and April was a really slow period for me fandom-wise. But in May I started playing The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy! And wow, I love it. I have so many thoughts. I might make a series of blog posts about each route and my thoughts on them? I'm aiming to get all 100 endings. So far I've completed: Killing Game, Rebellion, V'ehxness, Multiple Eitos, Slasher, Mystery, Box of Calamity, Conspiracy, 2nd Scenario, Reset, Goodbye Eito, Eva, Coming of Age, and Comedy. I'm currently working on Steady Fundamental and picking at the rest. I think this is my newest forever fandom, the way that Fire Emblem is for me.

I also played [community profile] battleshipex this year! Yay Team Strawberry! I had a lot of fun. I wrote 4 works and over 6k words, and drew 3 things! This was the best team I've ever been on, even though I loved Team Tunnel last year, and had so much fun my first year playing on Team Frost. I haven't really had a chance to look at my gifts yet, I'll probably start reading them after I post this entry, but I'm delighted just looking at the tags and summaries. Maybe I'll do a round-up?

Relatedly (or maybe just to me), I've been wondering what to do about archiving my fic on dreamwidth. I like having it here, but I am so behind and just feel less strongly right now about AO3 and the OTW being annoying and bone-headed. Maybe I'll just post links to the fic with summaries?

In a similar vein, I'm trying to pivot away from using Google Docs to write my fics, due to them locking some people's fics recently. I rarely share the links to my fics, but it makes me feel better having all my fic be on my laptop. I'm trying out Scrivener right now. It's got a lot of bells and whistles that I don't really need, but I've been kicking around an original idea in my head, and may try those features out to write a long original work sometime. So far I like Scrivener, but I'm not in love with it. I haven't written a whole lot using it, though, this decision to move away from gdcos came after Battleship was pretty much over.

Also, new default icon! I commissioned a FE4 artist who draws Seliph in a way that I absolutely love, and I love how adorable he looks! I really liked Syaoran as my icon, but I think this Seliph icon is going to be a permanent change. Unless I commission the same artist for a similar drawing of Leif... it's a tempting thought.

In personal news, nothing much has changed, but I'm happier at my job now that I've switched restaurant locations within the airport. There's still some friction with the servers, but it's just a little bit sometimes and not nearly as bad as it was before. I'm coming up on a year of living on my own out of my parents' house! It's been great. Being financially independent can be really stressful sometimes, but it really makes me feel fulfilled to be taking care of myself 100% financially.

Oh, I think I forgot to post this before-- but I've officially realized that I'm trans. In retrospect, it was obvious. Oh well, I'm finally here. Agender is what I feel best describes me right now, and pronouns aren't a big deal to me right now but I do prefer they/them.

Editing to add!!: I also got a bluesky account! I don't want to use twitter anymore, but I enjoyed its functionality. Here's my profile: bsky.app/profile/tacticianjack.bsky.social

Last week I went to the cinema to watch James Gunn's Superman reboot. I went with two friends, one of whom is a fellow Superman enjoyer and the other of whom doesn't even really do superheroes - but all of us had a great time.

As someone who was very much a fan of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) but has since dropped off following it almost completely, I would definitely say I had superhero adaptation fatigue. But I'm glad I went to see it - and it's also given me a cause to reflect on my past Superman fandom and the fact that I am, in fact, a Superman girlie at heart.

Meme showing a yellow schoolbus labelled Superhero Fatigue turning onto a road. In the next image it is violently broad-sided by a freight train labelled Superman 2025.
Pretty much this

When I first saw the posters and marketing for Superman, my knee-jerk reaction was, 'Do we really need another Superman film?' Okay, James Gunn is a good director, but that alone wasn't enough to convince me that it would be worthwhile. Apparently this one was going to have a super-dog in it, which is different, but not something that really appealed to me. It wasn't until my friends took an interest (and shared some very fun interviews with the cast members) that I considered seeing it at all, much less in the cinema.

While there obviously are commercial motivations at play, I can now say that it was also clearly made with a lot of care and heart, a lot of love and respect for the source material, and that's so evident when watching the film.

Tuesday Top Five: Summer Bucket List

Here are some things that I want to do before the summer is over, most of which I have not done yet.

1. Spend some time on a beach

2. Have a picnic in a park

3. Bake a pie with fruit from a farmer’s market (or blueberries from my recent blueberry picking trip with my mom)

4. Attend at least one of the outdoor movie screenings in and around the Boston area

5. Visit the Somerville Flea

Perhaps some of my friends would like to do one or more of those things with me! (Even if you don't help me make the pie, you can still eat some of it.)

Challenge #1 - Lights On [DW link]:
Journaling Prompt: Light up your journal with activity this month. Talk about your goals for July or for the second half of 2025.

Creative Prompt: Shine a light on your own creativity. Create anything you want (an image, an icon, a story, a poem, or a craft) and share it with your community.
Looking back at my Fandom Snowflake Challenge goals for Challenge 4 [DW link], I've really just kept up with sharing some fandom events in PF's Fandom Calendar community. I think I was a little too confident in my ability to act like nothing changed when I switched from online work to in-person work. Even though I posted something on PF about this change as a forewarning of me replying to people at a different time of day, I wasn't really expecting that I'd have a whole bunch of time immediately after my shift where I'm just in recovery mode.

In terms of making progress on my existing goals:

1. Designate a certain day and/or time for reading.
Weekly feels like a more achievable goal than trying to do something every day after work, but as long I stick to it, it doesn't matter which day or how long. There's no specific amount pages that I need to aim for. Whatever gets done is what gets done.

2. Eliminate decision paralysis on picking a book to read.
(Oh, I should read the actual books I have. Wait, I keep getting told I should read Project Hail Mary before the movie trailer spoils me on something. But I've got all of Libby to choose from...) Nu, I need to just make a short to-read list and follow the list.

3. Reframe archival progress on SqWA as prep for the possible DW community for archiving [linked post is view-locked to logged in PF users].
I haven't actually decided that I will make a Dreamwidth comm for personal archiving just yet, but that's not the point. I need to turn the SquidgeWorld Archive progress from 'thing I've been avoiding because it's become a guilt-ridden chore' into 'neutral thing that will make the DW comm easier'.

Character notes for Goda Ryuji

mossy_bench: A mossy bench (MB)
[personal profile] mossy_bench
Thinking a lot about the characterization of Ryuji, since I want to write fic about him and Daigo and would like to flesh out some headcanons about how he approaches relationships. I endeavored to extrapolate as much as I could from canon, but I also made some shit up. If I ever wrote a ship manifesto, this would be the foundation, probably.

Goda Ryuji

  • Personality: Confident and ambitious. Ruthless. Can go from calm and even-tempered to hot-blooded quickly. Normally on his guard and distrustful. Not quick to praise. Demonstrably violent, especially to underlings. Terse and tetchy when too drunk since he doesn't feel in control. Not against obliging himself with a little treat (read: ONS) when he feels things are going well. Separates sex and emotions/intimacy very cleanly.
  • Motivations: Ashamed of origins and put all his energy into proving himself and establishing his power. Feels alone in the world, intimacy starved, no personal connections, in part due to circumstance and in part self-inflicted. In order to prove he deserves to live, needs to be the best. Currently pretty at peace with that state of affairs. Hates being put in a box.
  • Strengths: Can be subtle or tactful when he needs to be. Perceptive. Charismatic. Disciplined. Is principled about giving respect when he feels it's deserved, even if he personally dislikes someone.
  • Weaknesses: Arrogant. Stubborn. Brutish. Has blinders on and is a bit one-track-minded about the way he does things and his goals. Not so brilliant at things outside of crime and internal politics/plotting (and he's not the best at the latter either). General baseline toxic masculinity.
  • Conflict/Development: To continue on his path, he needs to separate how he might feel personally, from his understanding of how the world is supposed to be. Once he actually connects to someone and feels less alone, he does get unmoored. He has to claw himself back to that single-mindedness and detachment.

Relatedly, I am obsessed with this RyuDai fanart.

The recent wave of censorship affecting itch.io has consequently targeted my friends, the very talented [personal profile] lb_lee, and they're selling signed and decorated copies of their work. You can read more here about what happened and what they're offering. (Content warning for non-explicit talk of child abuse, which is the subject of the comic that got suspended.)

This rancid business is reminding me even more of Strikethrough (an mass deletion of LiveJournals in the 2000s, which affected communities of abuse survivors as well as fandom blogs) than it did already.

(I have edited this post to correct some previous misleading language, since another friend has reminded me that the directive to remove controversial material from platforms like itch.io comes from payment processors, not the platform itself.)

Things continue much as before. I wanted to make a post, but I haven't quite the brain for reviews or the like, so here are two random quick things:

1. Back when we were all making top 100 lists, [personal profile] osprey_archer did a picture books one, and there was a discussion in the comments about US vs UK picture books, so I did a UK one, with the best/most popular/influential picture book illustrators I could think of (up to 2010 when I stopped being a children's librarian and, indeed, anything much), but it took ages to try and make sure I wasn't missing people and put all the covers on, and then I kept forgetting I'd made it.

It's here for those who like clicking on books in a list.

(I apologise for the lack of 2010s and 2020s; but I have not kept up at all! Also I included picture books only for the most part, with a few honourable exceptions, so this means there are very few early reader type books & no comics, but there are picture books for older readers. It needs to be an unorthodox size and shelved in the kinder boxes! Also, I focused on illustrators not authors. Plus a tiny handful were just personal favourites, but it is my list. ;-p)

2. I was talking about Outrageous, the U&Drama/Britbox TV series about the Mitfords last time. It continued to be excellent and it finally occurred to me that I could link the trailer, which would be helpful:
