Hi there! A month ago I proclaimed my goal for October, which was to write three specific, silly fics for a set of Schlocktober prompts in the fandom Hello From the Magic Tavern. I'm here to navel-gaze on what the experience was like. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with how things went.

The original goals, under the cut )

My Method: Fun and Games
The main obstacle I foresaw was that I would get stumped trying to write for a canon with such a particular tone/vibe, and for which canon review was difficult. The fan wiki's quality and completeness leaves something to be desired, and there are no scripts to reference since the show is entirely improvised. One thing I did to surmount this was extensive long-form pre-writing.

More on fun and games under the cut )

What I Actually Wrote: Gore, a Prequel, and the Weirdest Vehicle for Unrequited Love Yet
The first fic I posted for the challenge was "Proprioception" (on AO3), which is nasty gory self-cest. I must emphasize that I am a huge scaredy-cat about gore so it is especially astounding that I wrote this. But, it was something I felt had to exist. More extended reflections are in this post I wrote in the beginning of the month. In retrospect, I do think it helped me build my confidence. It felt more approachable because I really only had to review a few episodes of canon to write it, and the canon had already set up the premise for sex. Armed with a detailed outline, I wrote and posted the fic with an incredible amount of momentum. And at least one other person than me liked it!

I started on the next fic, which was supposed to be a quick, silly little PWP with secret identities and cross-dressing. I'm sure you can guess what happened.

More about what I wrote under the cut )

Suffice it to say I'm really happy with my progress. I'd written fics for Hello From the Magic Tavern before, but that was a long time ago, and I wasn't 100% comfortable writing in that world yet. (For one, the canon is hilarious, and writing humorous fic is not easy.) This has been a great month to work through some of those hesitations, to discover that there are a handful of people who are also excited about this fandom, and to stretch myself as a writer.

Meme AO3 tag game

Snagged this from [personal profile] meridian_rose

Go to your Works page on AO3, look at the tags, and see what the answers to these questions are. (Or any other site that has tags, I don’t know if FFnet or Wattpad does)

1. What rating do you write most fics under?
General Audiences (109 of 162 fics at AO3)

Not really a surprise honestly, I don't normally write adult/mature scenes so that would be a super rare thing to appear. Teen would mostly be for violence or implied mature scenes (which again rare).

2. What are your top 3 fandoms?
Smallville (41 at AO3)
X-Men Evolution (20 at AO3)
X-Men (Original Timeline Movies) (18 at AO3)

X-Men (comicsverse) (16 at AO3) and X-Men - All Media Types (16 at AO3) are right below the list. I kinda tend to do an amalgamation of Evolution, Movieverse & comics when I do anything X-Men related. Probably because I absorbed so much various canon stuff when I was younger.

Besides X-Men, Harry Potter (15 at AO3) and Marvel Cinematic Universe (11 at AO3)

3. What is your top character you write about?
Chloe Sullivan (Smallville) is at 38 at AO3.
Scott Summers (X-Men) is at 20 at AO3.

Haven't seen Smallville since it's ending, so I haven't really been writing about Chloe lately... Plus the whole actress thing makes me feel slightly guilty? (or something) But like I still love Chloe though. I'll have to eventually rewatch the series or hope Chloe appears in another adaption sometime.

Scott is still a character I want to write, besides him and Rogue have been my favorite X-Men characters since the 90s & I watched the Animated Series for the first time. Still hoping they'll make an appearance in the MCU eventually.

4. What are the 3 top pairings?
Rogue/Scott Summers (X-Men) is at 8 at AO3.
James Potter/Lily Evans Potter (Harry Potter) & James Potter/Mystique (HP/X-Men) are tied with 7  at AO3 due to the crossover series where Mystique takes Lily's place after the real Lily died as a child. It's a series that was supposed to have more parts to it, but probably won't honestly. Johnny Storm/Chloe Sullivan (Fantastic Four/Smallville) is also tied with 7 at AO3.
Clark Kent/Chloe Sullivan (Smallville) and Kara Danvers/Maxwell Lord (Supergirl TV series) are tied with 6 at AO3.

5. What are the top 3 additional tags?
Drabble (70 at AO3)
Crossover (50 at AO3)
Community: galorechallenge (29 at AO3)

6. Did any of this surprise you? e.g. what turned out to be your top tag.
The rating and fandoms didn't, I participated in a lot of various Smallville challenges - even started several of my own, including [community profile] sv100 and [community profile] svpromptstables plus several ran other Smallville or DC related communities. Same thing with the X-Men - participated in the xmenbigbang challenge and started [community profile] xmen15 and [community profile] xmen100. Besides I tended to write a lot of crossovers years ago and ran several crossover challenges including [community profile] galorechallenge (which is also not a surprise at one of my top tags) and xoverland at livejournal plus started several crossover communities.

Like I've stated before in various memes - not all my work are actually at AO3. And I combined some of my drabbles under one piece ("drabble collections") so the numbers are actually skewed. Just means I'll have to try and finish adding my older work.

But anyway, my top tag is not a surprise. I mostly write drabbles or ficlets or one shots. Honestly larger fics & multi-chaptered works are rare. Drabbles were mostly inspired by various prompt challenges at livejournal that were only 100 words allowed so when you participate in a lot of those, it's not really a surprise tag.

Honestly the only thing that really surprised me were the ship tags - but I think that just means I need to actually add my older works to AO3. I still think Scott/Rogue and Clark/Chloe would be one of the top ones, but I think the others would be lower.

I will probably do this again, but with my dreamwidth fic community [community profile] harpiewriting which I feel like would have a better fandom/character/pairing representation. Since I only use fandom/character/pairings tags there, I can't say for sure the "additional tags" situation would be different, especially since we (or I at least) definitely didn't start using tags the AO3 way until sometime after joining AO3. Numbers would be skewed higher for ratings, but General Audiences would still be the top rating at least. And now I'm limited to 1000 tags so we'll see (I'm at 932!).

Edit 11/3/2025: The below stats are using my fic community[community profile] harpiewriting - [TAGS page]

1. What rating do you write most fics under?
General Audiences (496 of 655 fics) with Teen at 126/655. Originally the community was separated by "G/PG or K/K+" but once I realized there was only a 1000 tag limit for communities here at dreamwidth, I combined the two ratings - they were basically the same thing anyway - at least in my eyes.

2. What are your top 3 fandoms?
Smallville (167)
X-Men (91)
Harry Potter (67)
Twilight (61)
Supernatural (54)
Heroes (53)

So Smallville (Crossover tag 86) and X-Men (Crossover tag 54) are still the top fandoms, as is Harry Potter (Crossovers tag 55) still technically in third place, just numbers are a little higher. Twilight (Crossover tag 6) is close behind, which honestly I forgot how much I wrote for that fandom - granted it's mostly drabbles written for twilight100 and various other prompt tables. Supernatural (Crossover tag 47) is next but unlike the others is mostly crossovers and Heroes (Crossover tag 24) fandom rounds out with the next closest and only about half are crossovers.

3. What is your top character you write about?
Chloe Sullivan (Smallville) is at 128 tags.
Scott Summers (X-Men) has 50 tags.
Hermione Granger (Harry Potter) has 50 tags.

Again same characters, although Hermione basically joins the team. What can I say? I connect a lot and love those characters. Honestly I'm surprised Rogue from X-Men (33 tags) wasn't part of it or even the next one. It's actually Leah from Twilight (45 tags) again thanks to twilight100.

4. What are the 3 top pairings?
AC/Chloe (Smallville) is at 24 tags
Chloe/Clark (Smallville) is at 16 tags
Rogue/Scott Summers (X-Men) is at 13 tags.
Emmett/Leah (Twilight) is at 13 tags

I'm glad I was at least right about Chloe/Clark & Rogue/Scott up above, although I forgot I signed up a table or two for Chloe/AC ship. The fact that it's beating Chloe/Clark & Chloe/Oliver was shocking - I guess in my head, I more works of them.

5. What are the top 3 additional tags?
Drabbles
Crossovers
Canon Divergence

So basically the same thing as the AO3 but I switched out community: [community profile] galorechallenge so something is fairly common in my works besides crossovers and say fluff or fluff adjacent? Again I use only fandom / year published / rating / characters / ships tags so you'd have to go through all of my work to catch the "additional tags" options but I think Canon Divergence would be a great option, or at least close enough.

6. Did any of this surprise you? e.g. what turned out to be your top tag.

Honestly I think the Twilight and Heroes fandoms being so close surprised me. It's been ages since I looked at those works or hell even watched the fandoms (or read in the case of Twilight).  The Top 3 Pairings option also surprised me. This is mainly due to the Chloe/AC (Smallville) ship.

Watching the Detectives

First things first: the week wound up being unexpectedly tiring/ill-making but for good reasons if also stressful ones, so that made me erratic again. But at this point it would be erratic of me not to be erratic, I suppose.

Anyway, got a lovely [community profile] yuletide assignment, so fingers crossed, but I was very happy not to be an initial pinch hit! Not in itself, because that can be very cool and the only time I was a fairly early (I don't think it was initial) pinch hit I got 3 treats, BUT I went all out for 4 super-obscure requests and I nevertheless matched with someone! There was a visible offer for Enigma which also made me happy, but that means nothing, as bucket offers are invisible & visible ones may well be offering/not offering characters that would prevent matchability. BUT STILL. Someone not me also looked at it and went, yes, there should be fic! XD

I'm determined to catch up a bit with my watching posts, and we now enter the point that it really did become the summer of the cosy detectives, and this is still not all of them, and I didn't even bother including s3 of Beyond Paradise which I also watched in this same stretch, or started, anyway:

* The Drama channel finally came through with s2 & 3 of Miss Scarlet & the Duke! They showed s1 in 2023, which I loved, and I've had to wait all that time for more & I thought they'd lost the rights to it or something. It felt like at least three years! Unfortunately, I did accidentally manage to miss the first two episodes, but overall, again a thoroughly engaging run & I enjoyed it a lot. My favourite ep was where she and her rival detective guy (not the Duke) got snowed in a hotel in France or somewhere and had to work together and against each other to solve it. Top notch, full marks for trapped together and rivals forced to work together tropes done v well.

Not technically a cosy though. It is a lot of fun and isn't especially dark but nevertheless nothing with this banger of an opening credit sequence can be counted as cosy. Only downmarks being for William and Eliza clearly never going to be getting together, although, tbf, they do have good reason for it. Anyway, excellent, would totally be fannish if I was writing much and could get hold of it properly.

* Ch5 then chimed in with Murder Most Puzzling, which was only 4 episodes long and my DVR bailed on recording two of them (there were a lot of things all on TV at the same time, it was difficult for it), but this was daft yet surprisingly good in many ways and starred Phyllis Logan, finally freed from Downton Abbey and allowed to swear and also solve crime as the famous Puzzle Lady, with the complication of her not in fact creating her own puzzles - her brilliant introverted niece with relationship issues actually did that. Is a bit hard to rate exactly due to missing half of a very short series.

* Drama's original series Outrageous, about the Mitfords, which I mentioned several times while I was watching it, and does remain one of the best new TV series I've seen in a while - lively, engaging, able to navigate the more serious aspects pretty well too & a great cast.

* Finally gave up on Ghosts (US) about two or three eps into s4, though, because while it can be fun and sweet itself too, there's just so much painfully formulaic writing in so many of the episodes, the scales tipped from fun-if-flawed to just not worth it any longer and I remembered that I can just tap out if I want to, so I did. (I mean, it does make me appreciate how damn good UK Ghosts was, but I can do that by rewatching it).

Then there were some films I watched upstairs (whether by iPlayer on my tablet, or managed to get to on the dvd despite summer) which I will write about and some I watched downstairs which I cannot write about because I watched them. They were good. I was extremely tired (ill). It was summer. It is ridiculous with the ME/CFS to note that, at the same time, with the same level of brain and (lack of) energy, I took in significantly more of the things I watched upstairs on a bed whereas things I had to watch downstairs sitting up, I'm just *shrug* I watched it. (I listed all these in a post once before, so I mentioned them already). But, yeah. It's ridiculous. It's no wonder people always just wind up thinking we're making it all up. (Please don't open the window, all my energy will depart and I need to be lying down to watch films, sorry. By myself. Quarter of an hour at a time. Very slowly.)

AO3 Stats Meme

[personal profile] flareonfury
Another fic meme that's going around.... Not all my work is on AO3 & not all of my work is fixed to the dates they were actually written on/in since I joined AO3 in 2010. I don't think I thought to backdate them early on so honestly the dates might be a bit skrewed.

If you’ve written fics for more than one year on AO3, go to your statistics page. Click on the different years at the top to see the categories of statistics for each year.

2005 (14 kudos, 416 words, 3 bookmarks, 412 hits, 0 subscriptions) | 2006 (69 kudos, 11 bookmarks, 6491 words, 1 subscriptions) |
2007 (98 kudos, 17 bookmarks, 1468 words, 1 subscriptions) | 2008 (524 kudos, 87 bookmarks, 18278 words, 18 subscriptions) | 2009 (516 kudos, 83 bookmarks, 14355 words, 18 subscriptions) | 2010 (1133 kudos, 140 bookmarks, 15948 words, 29  subscriptions) | 2011 (221 kudos, 57 bookmarks, 20123 words, 3 subscriptions) | 2012 (1138 kudos, 110 bookmarks, 30018 words, 67 subscriptions) | 2013 (293 kudos, 31 bookmarks, 2836 words, 18 subscriptions) | 2014 (1287 kudos, 215 bookmarks, 7326 words, 25 subscriptions) | 2015 (233 kudos, 23 bookmarks, 1435 words, 14 subscriptions) | 2016 (1521 kudos, 208 bookmarks, 17293 words, 194 subscriptions) | 2018 (63 kudos, 8 bookmarks, 2473 words, 4 subscriptions) | 2019 (68 kudos, 7 bookmarks, 3607 words, 7 subscriptions) | 2020 (113 kudos, 14 bookmarks, 12006 words, 16 subscriptions) | 2025 (42 kudos, 6 bookmarks, 5034 words, 9 subscriptions)

1. Which year did you write the most words? Do you know why? e.g. you had more time; you were caught up in an exciting new fandom or pairing; you got a rush of ideas etc.
2012 has the most words - I definitely had more time/energy/muse during that period of time from 2008-2012 - between the last year of high school and first year of college and then a year of tech school instead and working part-time at my first official job so before I started working full time only. I think I was just more apart of fandoms on LJ during that period of time as well - joined several Big Bang (including xmenbigbang, zombiebang) challenges, 'Land communities, team drabble challenges, table challenges, and fic challenges. I think I also started posting my work to AO3 from LJ and/or FFN around this time & I may not have used the original publishing date for the different works.  For 2012 according to AO3 I had a lot of Harry Potter, X-Men, Supernatural & Glee fics - most were also crossovers between the fandoms.

2. Which year did you write the least words? Why was this? e.g. lack of time, too busy, no inspiration etc.
Well looks 2017 & from 2021-2024 were all 0. I can't remember 2017 honestly, so I'm guessing that's probably when I started having two full time jobs at a time which has mostly continued since, although now it's more of a one full time job+overtime & one part-time job. Lack of inspiration has definitely played a part - depression may have definitely played a part as well.

I think start of the LJ migration back after or around 2012 also played a part - there was just so much less activity on LJ & dreamwidth during that time and everyone seemed to migrate to Tumblr or wherever which was nice for the pretty pictures and instantly reblogging-ness but it also just kinda seems to have become just another way doomscroll through the years.

3. Which years did you get most hits, kudos, bookmarks and fic subscriptions? Do you know why? (e.g. popular fandoms, lots of words written.) Are there years where you have the same amount of bookmarks and subscriptions?
2010-2014 & 2016 seems to be highest for all of those. Well probably because I participated in a few of the popular fandoms including MCU, Supernatural & Arrowverse. Daughter of Iron Man (MCU, Darcy & Tony) was published in 2014 which seems to be my most popular fic which honestly - I'm pretty proud of. Also not so simple (broken smile) (MCU, Darcy/Bucky) was published in 2016. What can I say? Darcyland is the best ;)

4. Which years did you get least hits, kudos, bookmarks and fic subscriptions? Do you know why? (e.g. niche fandoms, not many fics written.) Do you have any other conclusions?
Again, 2017 & from 2021-2024 were all 0. But otherwise 2018-2025 not a lot of fics were written during this time due to lack of time/energy/depression/muse/covid (again I mostly worked two jobs, mostly both jobs at full-time until I couldn't keep up anymore). I was also mostly just reading fic during or after breaks of work when I wasn't sleeping or watching TV. I also experienced carpal tunnel really badly in my right wrist (yay right handed) during that period of time which I think is what made me pull back from online.

Now I think I've mostly been writing rarepairs for the last several years - namely Kara/Maxwell (Supergirl TV series), Courtney/Henry Jr. (Stargirl TV series) - and this year (after apparently a five year stretch which damn I didn't even realize) where I've mostly written drabbles mainly for [community profile] xmen100 & [community profile] mcu100 and various of fic tables I had joined recently & years ago. Which people mostly seem to skip drabbles on AO3 which I completely get but meh kinda sucks, but whatever. At least I'm writing again and honestly that is what matters to me the most. Hopefully I'll get more comfortable and more inspired and I'll be to write more.

I shared part of a story that I wrote in fourth grade, which was inspired by both The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and... The Baby-Sitters Club. Yes, really.
